AUSTRALIANS COMMEMORATE ANZAC DAY CENTENARY

Australia’s Ambassador has invited members of the Australian and New Zealand communities in the Lao PDR, and visitors to Laos from both countries, to attend a 100th anniversary ANZAC Day commemoration.

Each year on 25 April, Australians and New Zealanders gather to pay tribute to the men and women who have served their nations in times of war, or in peacekeeping operations, and to reflect on the hardships and futility of conflict.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in World War I by thousands of young Australian and New Zealand troops.

The Australian Embassy in Vientiane will hold an ANZAC Day commemorative service at the Embassy at 5.30 am on Saturday 25 April.

Ambassador Williams said the centenary service would have special significance for Australian residents and visitors to the Lao PDR.

“In remembering the ANZAC landings, we pay tribute not just their service and sacrifice, but also to their values and the lessons they have left for future generations,” Williams said.

“These heroes taught us to endure hardship, to show courage, to be bold and resilient, to believe in ourselves, and to support each other through the greatest adversity. They helped enshrine our nation’s love of peace.”

More than 8,700 Australians lost their lives in the eight-month Gallipoli campaign, with more than 2000 casualties on the first day alone. 100,000 Australian service men and women died in the wars fought in the 20th Century.

Those wishing to attend the dawn service should register in advance by email [email protected] or telephone 021 353 800.
