ChildFund program launch speech

ChildFund program launch speech
by H.E. Mr John Williams, Australian Ambassador to the Lao PDR
6 April 2015, Australian Embassy

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s a real pleasure to be hosting this afternoon’s launch of ChildFund Australia’s Pass it Back project.

Just like our friends across the Lao PDR, Australians love our sport. One major reason for this is that sport is a great leveller. A platform for egalitarianism.

When you are on the football pitch, it does not matter whether you were born into a wealthy or famous family. Or went to the best schools. Or have the most expensive football boots or haircut.

What matters on the sports field - more so, I believe, than in the arena of life - are your skills, your personal effort, and your personal qualities like endurance, resilience and determination.

That I believe sits at the heart of the success of ChildFund Australia’s Pass it Back project. Using sport as a platform to instill life, team and leadership skills for young people in poor, remote communities.

I’m delighted the Australian Government has been able to support ChildFund’s programs here in the Lao PDR.

And I acknowledge the extensive donations ChildFund have received from private citizens in Australia who want to assist poor communities here in the Lao PDR.

I recognise too the unique partnership ChildFund Australia have forged with Women Win and the Asian Rugby Football Union, to utilise sport to promote life skills and community leadership.

I wish ChildFund Australia and their partners every success as they build on the success of their early projects in XiengKhouang, to extend Pass it Back across the Lao PDR and to 10 other Indo-Pacific countries.

And I look forward to seeing some of my Australian Embassy colleagues being tackled this afternoon by some of the Pass it Back trainers from Nong Het.

Thanks to all our guests for joining us today. And I wish you every success with this excellent program.
