Australia’s Foreign Minister Congratulates 70 Laos-Australia Scholarship Awardees

At a ceremony in Vientiane today, Australia’s Foreign Minister, Senator the Hon Bob Carr congratulated 70 Lao students who have successfully obtained Laos-Australia National Scholarships. HE Dr Phankham Viphavanh Minister of Education and Sports also attended the event.

The 4-year scholarships, provided by the Australian Government, support students from remote and educationally disadvantaged districts of Laos to undertake bachelor degree study at the National University of Laos.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Australian Foreign Minister told the students that they represented the best and brightest in remote and rural Laos.

“With these scholarships, Australia is supporting the Lao Government’s ongoing commitment to develop the next generation of leaders whether in public or private enterprise”

“Education is at the heart of the Lao economy and Laos’ future development. Education is also the flagship of the Australian aid program globally and here in Laos.”

The Lao Australian National Scholarships program aims to support young men and women to obtain professional qualifications in areas that are a focus of the Australian aid program in Laos, including education, rural development, trade and natural resources management. In addition to supporting young people further themselves, the program is working with The National University of Laos to build their skills to management and deliver scholarship programs and comprehensive student services.

This year marks the second year of the program; with 70 students having already commenced their studies in 2012.
