On behalf of the Australian Government, I would like to thank the Lao Department of Immigration for today’s gesture - to recognise the long history of cooperation between Australia and the Lao PDR on border control issues.
For Australia, this cooperation - dating back to the 1990s - among the officials who protect our borders, is invaluable.
The ASEAN Economic Community, or AEC, will bring tremendous benefits for the Lao PDR - as barriers to trade come down, and as the world increasingly looks at South-East Asia as a single, dynamic market.
But the AEC also will bring challenges. In a region where cross-border movement is becoming easier, and the illicit movement of people represents such a challenge, the skills of frontline immigration officials will be even more vital.
As a regional friend and neighbour, Australia is committed to continuing to help strengthen the Lao PDR’s border security.
Australia’s assistance in border management is one part of our long-standing support for ASEAN’s vision of regional integration – through practical measures, and not just rhetoric.
We welcome the importance the Lao PDR’s immigration department places on our cooperation, and its commitment to strengthening regional border security.
