Australian team helps burns patients at
Mahasot General Hospital

From 22 February to 4 March 2010 a team of highly skilled surgeons and nurses from Australia will be providing treatment at Mahasot General Hospital for Lao patients who have suffered burns and other injuries. The team is funded by Interplast Australia and New Zealand which is a not for profit organisation aiming to improve the lives of those who suffer from debilitating conditions. Interplast provides surgical and allied health services in developing countries, supporting local health services and providing training to enable the delivery of surgical and other related health care.

This year the team consists of seven highly skilled members including Mr Philip Slattery (surgeon), Mr James Savundra (surgeon), Dr Christopher Lowry (anaesthetist), Dr Serge Kaplanian (anaesthetist), Ms Angela Doherty (nurse), Ms Gillian Bathgate (nurse) and Ms Samantha Jervios (nurse). During this visit, the Interplast team will also focus on training and education for the treatment of burns injuries and will treat around 100 selected patients.

Interplast has been delivering services and training to medical professionals at Mahasot General Hospital since 1996. Interplast surgical programs consist of surgical teams deployed to South East Asia and the Pacific. Volunteer team members are Australian & New Zealand medical practitioners (surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses) who provide treatment and professional development to improve the capabilities of local surgeons to deliver services.
