Children encouraged to study with package from the Australian Government
Thirty disadvantaged children from Saphanthong Neua Primary School today received a school uniform, school bag and educational materials from the Lao Association for Disadvantaged Children with funding provided by the Australian Embassy’s Direct Aid Program (DAP).
DAP funds contributed to a larger project to buy school uniforms and educational materials for disadvantaged children across Vientiane, to give the children an equal opportunity at school and improve their quality of life. The project is run by Ms Khamphone Phimmaseng, President of the Lao Association for Disadvantaged Children.
The Australian Embassy has funded twelve similar projects since July 2006 under the DAP, including construction of schools, a community learning centre, toilet facilities, renovation of a delivery room, and income generation projects.
DAP is a flexible small grants scheme designed to respond quickly to requests for assistance by providing small grants that address humanitarian hardship. The Embassy will support projects in the areas of community health, education, small scale infrastructure, rural development and the environment.
“We continue to look for projects that meet the DAP guidelines, like that run by the Lao Association for Disadvantaged Children,’ said Rachael Cunliffe, DAP Coordinator at the Australian Embassy. “It’s a good example of a project where many people in the community are contributing and are invested in its success, the children, the parents and the school”, she said.
DAP is available to individuals, community groups, NGO's and others engaged in development activities. It is primarily aimed at supporting projects or activities that involve the people who benefit. The program specifically targets children, minorities and other disadvantaged groups in all provinces.
