Australia provides rice for poor families
Australia has contributed A$500,000 for the purchase of rice to be distributed to poor families throughout Laos.
The contribution was recognised in a handover ceremony today between Dr Michele Forster, Australian Ambassador to Laos, and Ms Karin Manente, Representative of the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP). Witnessing the handover was Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Mr Laoly Faiphengyoa.
Australia’s contribution will enable WFP to buy more than 480 metric tons of rice for distribution to poor families in rural areas. It will be provided to families who have been affected by Typhoon Ketsana or by other natural hazards such as rodent infestation and ongoing drought.
The contribution is being channelled through WFP’s Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) in Laos. Australia has been an ongoing supporter of the PRRO, contributing more than $2.3 million to the operation since 2004.
